Someone you love was detained. Here's the next hour.

Do these five things, in order. By step four you'll have everything we ask for on the first call.

Build your call sheet

An attorney answers, in English or Spanish, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. After 9, leave the facility name and your number and we call back by 8 a.m. (Sample hours.)

This is general information, not legal advice. Every case is different. The minutes are a suggested order, not a deadline.

  1. 10minutes in

    Write down who they are.

Full name, date of birth and country of birth. If they have an A-number (nine digits, printed on any immigration paper), write that down too. If you don't have it, that's fine.

  2. 20minutes in

    Find out where they are.

Search the ICE detainee locator with the A-number and country of birth, or with their exact name and country. ICE says it can run up to eight hours behind, and county jail lists often won't show them. Write down the name of the facility.

  3. 30minutes in

    Sign nothing yet.

If someone hands them a paper, they can ask to talk to a lawyer before signing. Some papers can't easily be undone.

  4. 45minutes in

Call us with what you wrote.

Read it to us. We'll tell you what's possible, what it costs and what we need from you. We won't promise a result.

  5. 60minutes in

    Gather what you have.

Passport or ID, any immigration papers, a court notice if there is one, and the names of people who can speak for them. Keep it off social media. Anyone can read it.

Your call sheet.

Fill in what you know. Skip what you don't. It writes the first thing to say when we pick up.

Nine digits. Skip it if you don't have it.

Where are they held?
Did they sign anything?
Is there a court date or a notice?

What we can and can't do.

  • We can't promise a result.On the first call we'll tell you what's possible.
  • Bond depends on how they entered and their history. On the call we'll tell you which court decides, and whether a bond hearing is possible at all.
  • Criminal arrest? We'll point you to a defense lawyer. We don't handle criminal cases.
  • Flat fees, quoted on the first call.Government filing fees are extra. The first call costs nothing. (Sample terms.)
